THE AREA
Towering over a turquoise sea, Capo Vaticano
dominates as far as the eye can see, to the Aeolian Islands,
the Gulf of Lamezia Terme and to the south-west the Gulf of
Gioia Tauro culminating in the Straight of Messina and a wonderful
view of the peak of Etna.
Many places of interest are within easy reach of Capo Vaticano:
the marvellous Aspromonte National Park at the southern tip
of the Apennine chain which slopes down towards the sea and
the beautiful town of Scilla. This charming town of fishermen
and craftsmen, which is overlooked by the Castle Ruffo di
Calabria, is renowned for its restaurants which offer excellent
fish dishes.
Further south and well worth a visit is the town of Reggio
Calabria. Its Museum of Archaeology, where the famous Bronzes
of Riace are exhibited, is of particular interest and the
sea front with its centuries-old trees.
Just two hours away by car, on a high mountainous plateau
in the middle of Calabria, is the Sila National Park which
is famous for its beautiful lakes and larch trees which are
over a hundred years old. Well known for its specialities
such as mushrooms, “caciocavallo” cheese and for
its local handicraft.
The small town of Pizzo, sitting on top of the rocks overlooking
the sea, is not to be missed and should include a visit to
the Castle Aragonese, a national monument , where Napoleon’s
brother-in-law, Gioacchino Murat, was killed.
Famous for its “tartufo” ice cream and a thriving
tuna industry.
Only 9km away from Capo Vaticano is Tropea , a town renowned
for its tourist attractions and world famous for its red onions
(cippola rossa di Tropea).
But talking of food there are numerous local products such
as N’duja from Spilinga, Soppressata, Caciocavallo,
Filei , Surici……..But Calabria is this and much
more.
It really is worth spending a holiday with us!
